Consumer & Economic Justice Legal Assistant

The LawNY Consumer Law Unit was created in 2017 to increase LawNY’s capacity for representing clients with consumer protection problems. The AmeriCorps member will assist the program-wide Consumer Law Unit in expanding our consumer protection work by staffing our Consumer Hotline and working on high-impact litigation cases to stop predatory and abusive practices that trap our clients in financial insecurity.

The Rochester AmeriCorps Consumer & Economic Justice Legal Assistant will focus on a wide variety of consumer issues, including: debt collection, student loans, auto fraud, and consumer scams. 

The AmeriCorps member will assist LawNY in advancing economic justice by:

  1. conducting initial client intake interviews and identifying legal problems;
  2. conducting investigations into clients cases, under attorney supervision; 
  3. assisting in the preparation of cases, conducting legal research, drafting legal documents and memorandum; 
  4. under the supervision of an attorney, providing advice and representation to clients in administrative proceedings, when permitted by law and ethical considerations, and; 
  5. conducting outreach to the community.

The direct services provided may include, but are not limited to: assisting eligible clients in obtaining discharges for their student loans; investigating potential consumer fraud claims; filing complaints with the Attorney General’s office; and training community members about consumer rights.

Members receive a living allowance of $629 semi-monthly for the duration of the contract term. They may also be eligible for aid in obtaining basic health coverage, an educational award of up to $6,345, childcare expenses and deferment of student loans. The successful candidate will be serving full-time at least 1700 hours of service, over a 48-week term in our Rochester, NY office. The term of service may begin as early as October 2021. Term renewal may be available after that time.


  1. Associates degree and/or equivalent experience. 
  2. A demonstrated commitment of service to the poor.
  3. Preference for applicants residing in the community to be served and with language skills necessary to serve the community.
  4. Remote work schedule is possible.
